Meta AI versus your own WhatsApp assistant: which one is answering your customers

Meta AI is Meta's assistant, inside WhatsApp, speaking to your customer as Meta. It is not your business assistant, it does not know your prices, and you cannot configure it. Businesses in Dubai routinely assume the blue circle in their app is somehow theirs. This page separates the two and says which one does what.

The short answer, in five lines

Meta AI belongs to Meta. It answers the WhatsApp user's own questions, in their own chat, as Meta AI. You have no control over it and no visibility of it.

Your business assistant belongs to you. It runs on your verified number, answers as your business, and knows whatever you have given it.

They never meet. A customer messaging your business is not talking to Meta AI, and Meta AI cannot answer on your behalf.

Only one of them can book an appointment. Yours, and only if you have connected it to a diary.

Meta AI is free and worth nothing to you commercially. That is not a criticism. It was never built to sell your services.

Why the confusion is so common

Three things landed close together, and together they produced a muddle.

The actual position is narrower and better than it sounded. Meta removed rival general assistants and kept business assistants, which it continues to encourage. Our guide to the 2026 policy sets out what the terms say.

What Meta AI cannot do for your business

It cannot answer your customers. When someone messages your business number, Meta AI is not in that conversation.

It cannot be trained on your information. There is no place to put your price list or your availability.

It cannot be audited. You will never see what it told anyone about your sector, and you cannot correct it.

And a real risk worth naming: a consumer may well ask Meta AI, or ChatGPT, about your industry and act on the answer. You cannot control that assistant, but you can control what it finds when it looks your business up. That is an argument for publishing clear, accurate, dated information about what you do, not for trying to configure something you do not own.

Frequently asked questions

Is Meta AI the same as a WhatsApp business chatbot?
No. Meta AI is Meta's own assistant answering the WhatsApp user, as Meta AI. A business assistant runs on your verified number and answers your customers as your business.

Can I train Meta AI on my business?
No. There is no mechanism to give it your prices, hours or availability, and no way to see or correct what it says.

Does Meta AI reply to people who message my business?
No. It is not in that conversation. If nobody answers your business number, nobody answers.

Did Meta ban AI chatbots from WhatsApp?
It barred general-purpose assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity from the Business Platform on 15 January 2026. Structured business assistants for customer service, bookings and escalation remain permitted and encouraged.

Can Meta AI book appointments for my clinic?
No. Only an assistant you control, connected to your diary, can do that.

Should I worry about what AI assistants tell people about my business?
It is worth attention. You cannot configure someone else's assistant, but you can make sure accurate and clearly dated information about your services exists for it to find.

How we checked this, and what we could not settle

Checked: the 15 January 2026 scope change and the 15 October 2025 date for newly registered accounts, against contemporaneous reporting and OpenAI's transition notice. The 24-hour service window against Meta's developer documentation. The UAE VoIP restriction against the regulator's published policy.

Not settled: Meta AI's behaviour when asked about a specific named business. It varies by phrasing and by region, and we have not run a systematic test across UAE sectors. If anyone tells you they know exactly how it describes your clinic, ask how they measured it.

Want an assistant that is actually yours?

We build WhatsApp assistants on your own verified number, grounded in your prices and diary, with escalation to a named human and a transcript you keep.

Who is responsible when an assistant is wrong

This is where the distinction stops being academic. If Meta AI tells a consumer something wrong about your sector, that is Meta's output and you have no standing in it. If your assistant tells a customer something wrong, that is your business speaking.

Federal Law No. 15 of 2020

Consumer Protection. Obligations sit with the supplier. A price, a claim or a commitment made to a consumer through your own channel is made by you, whoever typed it.

The same law prohibits suppliers from using consumer data for marketing purposes, which is why a service conversation cannot quietly become a marketing list.

Three practical consequences for anyone running their own assistant.

What your data obligations look like either way

Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021

Personal Data Protection Law, in force 2 January 2022. Consent is required to process personal data, with narrow exceptions for public interest and legal procedures. People may ask you to correct data, or to restrict or stop processing, and the law sets requirements for cross-border transfer.

Meta AI does not create obligations for you, because you are not the controller of that conversation. Your own assistant does. The asymmetry is the point: the thing you control is the thing you are answerable for, and it is also the only one that can earn you anything.

What to do about assistants you cannot control

You cannot configure Meta AI, and you cannot configure the assistant a customer opens before they contact you. You can change what those systems find.

  1. Publish the facts plainlyServices, areas covered, hours, what you do not do. Assistants extract from clear statements far more reliably than from marketing copy.
  2. Date everythingAn assistant weighing two sources tends to prefer the one that says when it was checked. So does a human.
  3. Answer the actual questionsUse the phrasing customers use, as headings, with the answer immediately underneath.
  4. Cite primary sourcesRegulators and legislation, not other companies. It is more durable and it does not advertise anyone else.
  5. Keep it consistent across pagesContradicting yourself between two of your own pages is the fastest way to be quoted wrongly.

We are describing what we do and why, not a measured ranking effect. We have not run a controlled study on assistant citation, and anyone claiming a reliable method for it should be asked how they measured it.

The commercial case, stated plainly

Meta AI costs nothing and returns nothing to you. Your own assistant costs money and can return something. The question is only whether the return clears the cost.

Where the money comes fromWhy it appears
Enquiries answered out of hoursA message at 9pm that gets a real answer is a booking. The same message ignored until morning is often gone
The 24-hour window kept openReplying instantly means the rest of that conversation is free-form rather than templated
Staff time returnedThe repetitive questions stop reaching a person
Fewer no-showsReminders and easy rescheduling, on the channel people actually read
A record that survivesThe conversation belongs to the business, not to whoever held the phone

We are not going to put a percentage on any of those. The honest method is to count your own unanswered messages for two weeks, apply your own conversion and your own average value, and compare that to the quoted cost. If it does not clear comfortably, do not buy.
